LATA Comes of Age in the House of Lords

31 Jan

The evening of Wednesday, 30 January marked a milestone as the Latin American Travel Association (LATA) celebrated its 21st anniversary at its annual reception with the All-Party Parliamentary British-Latin American Group in the Palace of Westminster. Key speakers included Rt Hon Hugo Swire, Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, whose responsibilities cover Latin America.

Founded in 1992, the travel trade organisation brings together over 250 companies including tourism boards, airlines, hotels and tour operators and was founded to promote travel to the many diverse destinations of Latin America.

During the evening the British television personality Michael Palin was honoured with the LATA Media Award for 2013 for his contribution to Latin America and tourism in general.  The popular comedian, actor, writer and presenter was also recognised by LATA for his BBC television series Brazil and its contribution to promoting an understanding of Latin America in the UK and around the world.

“Michael Palin has been called ‘Britain’s Nicest Man’, and he is widely regarded as a national treasure. Destinations that have been featured in his documentaries have been lucky enough to benefit from the ‘Palin-effect’, inspiring viewers to travel and learn more about the world and its people. We salute him and his team for their contribution to travel and tourism,” said Christopher Pickard, Chairman of LATA and Critical Divide.

“Brazil and all of Latin America will continue to be in the media spotlight over the next few years, with the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and Olympics and Paralympics in 2016, and Palin’s Brazil series provides real insight in to the people and cultures of this rapidly developing region. Michael Palin is a very worthy recipient of LATA’s 2013 Media Award.”

Previous winners of the LATA Media Award include Jonathan Dimbleby for the BBC series A South American Journey, the travel team at the Telegraph Media Group, and Wanderlust travel magazine.

The Baroness Hooper, Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary British-Latin American Group, and Lucy Clark from the LATA Foundation and Orient-Express, echoed the importance of the evening’s objective: to promote and develop closer ties and communications through travel and tourism between LATA, the All-Party Parliamentary British-Latin American Group and the United Kingdom embassies of all the Latin American countries. Ambassadors and senior diplomats attended the reception from 21 of the Latin American embassies in London.

The evening also saw Ursula Vallance and Diana Marshall of South American Service Partner Organisation (SASPO) inducted into the LATA Hall of Fame. Both women were involved in the birth of LATA back in 1992. They were inducted by Ed Paine (Last Frontiers), one of the first members of the LATA Hall of Fame, and the longest serving LATA chairman.
